“DOPBNK” is an abbreviation used in SMS alerts and notifications sent by the India Post Bank. It is a government-owned payments bank designated by the Department of Postal Services.

As per the India Post Payment Bank Wikipedia Page, the bank has more than 90 million customers getting benefits of their services, such as savings accounts, money transfers, and bill payments, through the extensive postal network in India.

To inform users of their banking activities, India Post sends SMS alerts using government platforms and named as “DOPBNK”, such as transaction updates, withdrawal, and account notifications.

What is the Full Form of DOPBNK?

The full form of “DOPBNK” is Department of Post Bank. It is linked with India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), which was launched on 1 September 2018 by the PM of India, Narendra Modi. The bank is designed for quick banking services for users across india, especially in rural and remote areas.

Why Do You Receive ID DOPBNK SMS Alerts?

You might get SMS alerts from IDs like ID-DOPBNK, VD-DOPBNK, or IM-DOPBNK if you have an account with the Post Office bank (IPPB). These messages are just a way to keep you informed. Here’s why they usually pop up:

  1. Transactions in your account – If you deposit or withdraw money, or make any transfer, you’ll get a message right away so you know what’s happening.
  2. Savings schemes updates – If you’ve put money into schemes like KVP, RD, or NSC, you’ll get an alert when they’re about to mature.
  3. Balance info – Sometimes, the bank sends a quick SMS with your updated balance so you can easily track your money.
  4. Account or scheme closure – If any of your accounts or savings schemes get closed, you’ll be notified immediately.

What Do the Prefixes Like ID-, VK-, IM-, TD-, VD-DOPBNK Mean?

These Message IDs before the Bank name indicate to the users about the sender’s mobile operator and region. They’re just codes used in India’s SMS system. Let me tell you a few route names –

  1. ID-DOPBNK: This shows the message was sent via a particular telecom service provider or platform. It’s just one of many routes used to deliver the message to you.
  2. VK-DOPBNK: This prefix means the message came through a different telecom service provider but still relates to the same bank.
  3. IM-DOPBNK: This might indicate that the message was sent using an instant messaging service associated with banking.
  4. TD-DOPBNK: This represents another service provider, such as T for Tamil Nadu and D for Aircel and Dishnet wireless, via sending the message to your phone.
  5. VD-DOPBNK: This is another variation; it may indicate about vodafone delhi, again showing a different provider or messaging platform.

Is DOPBNK Legit or a Scam?

Yes, as per the RBI, DOPBNK-related SMS can be legitimate and trustworthy. It is directly linked with the India Post payment bank, which is owned by the Ministry of Communication; however, on the SMS, they want replies from you, asking for any amount, ATM PIN, bank details and any unknown SMS like winning lotteries and deduction of amount.

The experts recommend immediately do complain at 155299 and RBI Sachet.

What Should You Do If You Receive an ID DOPBNK SMS?

If you receive a message from DOPBNK and you have an account or an investment with them, you should:

  1. Check Your Account: First, verify the transaction or balance mentioned in the SMS with your account records and India Post Mobile Banking app.
  2. Updated Data: Double-check that your mobile number and contact info are up to date with the bank so you don’t miss any important alerts.
  3. Contact the Bank: If you notice something unusual and fake, contact the IPPB customer care number and complain about it.

However, if you are receiving lots of SMS titled like “INDIA POST” OR “DOP BNK” and you don’t have an active savings and loan account or never use their services, it’s possible that the message was sent in error or scam.

This can happen if your phone number was mistakenly linked to someone else’s account OR if someone sends a fake SMS by the name of the Bank. In this case:

  1. Ignore the Message: If you never use any services and do not hold any active accounts, simply ignore the SMS and never click on it.
  2. Report the Error: If the messages continue, you may want to report the issue to the India Post bank to prevent further errors or SCAM and contact RBI Toll Free #14448 to complain about this SMS source.

How to Stay Safe with These SMS

In most cases, DOPBNK messages are generally safe and legitimate, but here are a few tips to stay cautious always.

  1. Avoid Clicking on Links: If you get any unknown links in SMS messages, do not click on them unless you are sure they are from a trusted source. Sometimes, Scammers send fake messages that look like they are from an official bank. Not sponsored, but you can use True caller for safety.
  2. Verify Information: Always verify the information you receive in an SMS with your bank records or by contacting the bank directly.
  3. Update Your Information: Keep your contact information updated with the bank to ensure you receive the correct alerts.
