Let me tell you my client story, Miss Ritika from Udaipur, recently opened a savings account on SBI YONO. She needs to register for net banking for transactions, but she hit a roadblock. The website asks to enter your CIF number.
She paused and asked, “What is this CIF No.? Where do I even find it?”
If you have ever faced a similar problem, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Most of the SBI users are stuck there, so for help, this guide is for people just like you.
Hi, I’m Nanne Parmar, a Google Scholar Author. I can relate to your confusion. That’s why I have created this super simple guide to show you how to find your State Bank of India CIF Number — even if you don’t want to log in anywhere or visit your bank branch.
Just scroll down and explore every option step-by-step. So, without wasting time, let’s begin the guide –
What is the CIF Number in SBI Bank?

SBI is India’s largest bank in terms of assets, branches, and customer numbers. The bank holds up to 23% of the market share all over the country. The bank has over 500 million customers across 32 countries as of the end of 2024.
According to data from the official site of companiesmarketcap.com, SBI’s total assets as of 2024 stand at ₹66.76 lakh crore (American $790 billion).
To manage this massive customer base of up to 50 crore and their data smoothly, the bank uses something called a CIF Number.
So, what exactly is a CIF Number?
CIF stands for Customer Information File. It’s usually an 11-digit special number allotted to every new account holder. This code stores all your personal and account-related information in SBI’s central database.
It’s created when you first open your account and stays the same even if you have multiple accounts with the bank. It is also linked to your loan accounts, credit card accounts, and investment accounts.
Other Names of CIF in SBI
Your CIF number might be labelled differently depending on where you’re looking:
- Customer ID
- CIF ID (in the passbook usually)
- Customer Information File Number
- Relationship Number (in some cases)
All of these refer to the same thing in SBI.
How is CIF Different from Account Number or Username?
- CIF Number: Identifies you as a customer.
- Account Number: Identifies your specific bank account.
- Username: Used only for SBI Net Banking or YONO access.
So, even if you have two accounts in SBI, your CIF will be the same, but the account numbers will be different.
Where is the CIF Required?
You’ll need your SBI CIF Number for various tasks:
- Registering or resetting Internet Banking
- Re-KYC process
- Submitting the physical form at your branch
- Sending or stopping services via SMS banking
- Setting up online nominations
- Registering on SBI YONO or m-Passbook
- Creating or recovering a username and password
