October 22, 2025 Bank Holiday: Which States Have Govardhan Puja Break Today?

Easemoney News Desk, New Delhi, October 22, 2025– Banks across several Indian states will remain closed today, Wednesday, October 22, 2025, on account of Govardhan Puja, Balipratipada, Vishwakarma Jayanti, and Lhabab Duchen, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) state-wise holiday list under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

But this is not a nationwide bank holiday as per government documents; multiple states have declared a regional closure, leading to partial disruption of banking services across the country.

Where Banks Are Closed Today

As per the official holiday notifications and reports from The Economic Times and IndiaTimes, the following banking zones will observe a holiday on October 22 for regional festivals:

Govardhan Puja HOLIDAY OR NOT 2025
  • Ahmedabad (Gujarat) – Vikram Samvat New Year / Govardhan Puja
  • Mumbai, Nagpur, Belapur (Maharashtra) – Balipratipada / Govardhan Puja
  • Bengaluru (Karnataka) – Balipadyami
  • Jaipur (Rajasthan) – Govardhan Puja
  • Lucknow & Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) – Govardhan Puja
  • Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – Vishwakarma Jayanti
  • Gangtok (Sikkim) – Lhabab Duchen
  • Chandigarh (UT) – Govardhan Puja / Vishwakarma Jayanti

Other than banks in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Patna remain open, but timing can be different, since no state holiday has been declared for these regions today.

This makes October 22, 2025, one of those unique mid-festive-week dates when banking operations are active in some parts of India and paused in others.

Festivals Behind the Closures

The RBI’s October holiday schedule includes a cluster of festivals:

  • October 21 – Diwali (Lakshmi Puja)
  • October 22 – Govardhan Puja / Balipratipada / Vishwakarma Jayanti / Lhabab Duchen
  • October 23 – Bhai Dooj

Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali. It marks a focus on the worship of Lord Krishna for lifting the Govardhan hill with 1 finger. However, in southern India, the same day is observed as Balipadyami, which means honouring King Bali (Mahabali).

Many northern states also observe Vishwakarma Jayanti, celebrating the divine architect, while Sikkim observes Lhabab Duchen, commemorating Lord Buddha’s descent from heaven.

Impact on Banking and Business

Because bank holidays go only under the Negotiable Instruments Act, and apply only to physical branches. Your digital banking is still unaffected,

You can use –

  1. UPI and IMPS for any transfer around india.
  2. ATMs are still working
  3. RTGS/NEFT available via netbanking; there is no cut-off timing, we observe.
  4. Server down issues are not found.

However, branch-based services such as cheque clearance, cash deposits, cash withdrawal, RTGS via branch, loan documentation, and demand draft issuance will resume on October 24 (Friday).

Businesses operating across multiple states, mostly in logistics, trade, and finance, They may face delays fr any inter-state settlements today because of asynchronous banking operations.

Advisory for Customers

  • Plan transactions early if your city is observing a closure.
  • Avoid cheque deposits until branches reopen.
  • Use digital modes for urgent payments.
  • Confirm local schedules — some cooperative and rural banks follow separate calendars.
