A WhatsApp message is rapidly circulating for each SBI account holder. It claims that “Urgent Announcement” SBI YONO will stop working if users do not update their Aadhaar.
The message looks convincing because it uses the SBI logo, similar colours, and a formal layout.
It directs customers to download an APK file, file size 3 to 5 MB, and complete an “Aadhaar verification” process. Many SBI users reported receiving the same message in different formats, which created concern across social media.

To stop the confusion, PIB Fact Check posted an official alert on X, confirming that the claim is fake. Also, recently, SBI has clarified that it has not issued any such notice and does not send APK files for Aadhaar updates. Users have been advised to use only the official WhatsApp Number and avoid any other third-party app and use of unknown links, avoid installing any unofficial applications from WhatsApp, Text SMS, and rely only on the official YONO app or SBI website for any updates.
What the Viral Message Claims
The message spreading online claims the following:
- YONO access will be blocked unless users “update Aadhaar now.”
- An APK link must be installed to complete the update.
- Users are asked to fill details like Aadhaar, PAN, mobile number, and OTP.
- The layout resembles an official SBI notification.
The goal is to make users act quickly without verifying the source.
What PIB and SBI Have Confirmed
Both PIB and SBI have clearly stated:
- No Aadhaar update or KYC is required to keep using YONO.
- No APK file is sent by the bank.
- No update links are shared via WhatsApp, SMS, or Telegram.
- Banks never ask for sensitive information through such on your mobile SMS app and WhatsApp.
PIB’s tweet also warns users to avoid sharing any personal or banking information in response to such alerts.
Table: Fake Message vs. Official Reality
| Fake Message Claims | Actual Reality |
|---|---|
| YONO will stop working without Aadhaar update | No such instruction issued by SBI |
| APK file must be installed to continue | SBI never sends APK files |
| Personal details must be entered | SBI does not request details through messaging apps |
| Message looks official | It is crafted by scammers to appear legitimate |
How the Scam Operates
The scam uses fear and urgency to push users into downloading a file that may contain malware or phishing. Once installed, it automatically accesses your details and banking information, and it can read SMS, capture OTPs. In most cases, if you put your card information or account information, such as your Account number or CVV, they can deduct your account balance without the need for OTP. The message is designed to appear trustworthy so users do not question it.
What You Should Do
- Ignore and delete any message claiming YONO will be blocked.
- Do not download any APK from unknown links.
- Update apps only through the Google Play Store or App Store.
- For safety concerns, contact SBI through official channels.
- Report suspicious messages to report.phishing@sbi.co.in or the cyber helpline 1930.
