Understanding The CNG in India

CNG Vehicle India

CNG, or Compressed Natural Gas, offers a cleaner, greener, and significantly outperforms other common fuels. Most indians choose it as an efficient alternative to petrol and diesel. CNG is gradually becoming popular for automobile use in India, especially in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Bangalore, for several reasons:

  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Lower cost compared to petrol or diesel
  • Government initiatives to reduce air pollution

According to the report of IRIA Gujarat on May 26, 2025, The indian government recently applied substantial tax breaks to make CNG more affordable to operate for everyone.

There are several CNG fuel-type vehicles on Indian roads, such as the Auto Rickshaw, Load Carrier, Mini Trucks, pickups, Cars, hatchbacks, sedans, and even Two-wheelers like Bajaj Freedom 125 (World’s first CNG motorcycle)

How Does It Work?

In india, CNG vehicles have a different fuel delivery system compared to petrol or diesel. Also, it has company-fitted kit options, and the owner can fit from third-party kit. Here’s how it works:

Key Features:

  • CNG Cylinder: Stores the compressed gas
  • Pressure Regulator: Reduces gas pressure
  • Mixer or Injector: Mixes CNG with air before combustion
  • ECU (Electronic Control Unit): Controls fuel-air ratio and ignition

What are the key Factors Affecting CNG Mileage?

  • Driving habits
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Tyre pressure
  • Road and traffic conditions
  • Load in the car

CNG vs Petrol: A Clear Comparison

Here’s a quick comparison between CNG and Petrol in India:

How to Calculate the Average of a CNG Car

It is quite easy to calculate using our free calculator. Follow these steps –

CNG Mileage Calculator India
  1. First, you have to visit Easemoney India.
  2. Navigate to Menu>Resources>Tools> select indian CNG Average checker.
  3. Enter the distance travelled (in km).
  4. Type your CNG consumed (in kg).
  5. Select Vehicle Type (e.g., Car)
  6. Choose your fuel type to CNG as the default.
  7. You can also enter your vehicle name, like Wagon R, Alto CNG, etc. (optional)
  8. Tap on the calculate button to find results.

Also, you can find the single-trip cost by CNG

  • Input the CNG price per kg in your city
  • Enter trip distance (in km)
→ Get the total cost for that distance using your car’s mileage.

How to Find Monthly CNG Cost in India

  • At the Fuel price section (Rs/kg), enter the CNG price per kg in your city. (example: Delhi price is ₹76.09 per kg)
  • Enter the total km you drive per month
  • Based on mileage, it shows the monthly cost

Example:

  • Monthly distance = 1000 km
  • CNG Price = ₹65/kg
  • Mileage = 25 km/kg
  • Monthly CNG required = 1000 / 25 = 40 kg
  • Monthly Cost = 40 x 65 = ₹2600

Average Mileage of Popular Indian CNG Cars (Estimated)

Car ModelAverage (km/kg)
Maruti Alto CNG28 km/kg
Maruti Wagon R CNG26 km/kg
Hyundai Aura CNG25 km/kg
Tata Tiago CNG24 km/kg
Maruti Ertiga CNG21 km/kg
Hyundai Grand i10 CNG25 km/kg
Maruti S-Presso CNG27 km/kg
Toyota Glanza CNG22 km/kg

Our Calculator Also Has:

  • ECONOMY option: Enter your CNG mileage in km/kg (e.g., Alto gives 28 km/kg)
  • DISTANCE option: Input your travel distance (in km)
  • Fuel Price: Add your current CNG rate per kg
  • Instantly know your total travel cost based on your custom inputs

How does Calculation work with a Formula?

If you decide to use your mathematics and do the calculation by using a pen and paper. Here is the formula to use to find –

Manual Formula:

Mileage (km/kg) = Distance Driven (km) / CNG Consumed (kg)

Example:

Ravi drives 180 km using 6 kg of CNG.

  • Mileage = 180 / 6 = 30 km/kg
  • If CNG price = ₹70/kg, total cost = 6 x 70 = ₹420
  • The cost will be per km = ₹420 / 180 = ₹2.33/km

Additional Questions on your mind –

  • What does 12 kg of CNG give on average?

If your car gives 25 km/kg, 12 kg of CNG would take you around 300 km. Just divide 12 x mileage.

  • What is the mileage of a CNG auto rickshaw in India?

In India, auto rickshaws that work on CNG usually give around 25-35 km/kg; however, it also depends on city traffic, weather, and load conditions.

  • What is the mileage of 1 kg of CNG in a car?

It usually depends on the car models and sizes, but it typically ranges from 20 km/kg to go up to 35km/kg for most CNG cars, such as Alto, DZIRE CNG.

  • How do I calculate fuel cost for my CNG car trip?

Use our tool! Enter your car’s mileage, CNG price, and trip distance to get the total trip cost instantly.

  • Is CNG better than petrol for city driving?

Yes, due to lower running costs and emissions. Perfect for regular city commutes and long-term savings.

  • Can I switch between petrol and CNG anytime?

Yes, CNG cars in India come with dual-fuel systems, so you can switch whenever you want to maintain good mileage on the roads.

  • Why is CNG mileage different for the same car on different days?

CNG mileage changes due to traffic density, cylinder pressure, driving style, weather, and road conditions. Even small variations can change km/kg results noticeably in daily use.

  • Is manufacturer-claimed CNG mileage reliable for cost planning?

Not fully. Claimed mileage is tested under ideal conditions. Real-world mileage is usually 10–25% lower, which is why a calculator based on actual usage is important.

  • Does CNG mileage reduce when the cylinder is nearly empty?

Yes. As pressure drops, engine efficiency can slightly reduce, especially in older kits, which affects pickup and mileage during the last few kilometres of gas usage.

  • Can a CNG calculator help in deciding between factory and aftermarket kits?

Yes. By comparing real running cost per km, you can estimate recovery time, fuel savings, and whether the higher upfront cost of factory-fitted CNG makes sense.

  • Is CNG cost per km same across all Indian states?

No. CNG prices vary by state due to taxes and supply contracts. Cost per km changes even if mileage stays same, so local price input matters.

  • How does frequent short driving affect the CNG running cost?

Short trips reduce efficiency because the engine doesn’t reach optimal temperature. This increases gas consumption and raises the cost per kilometre compared to longer, steady drives.

  • Are CNG prices monitored or regulated in India?

Yes. CNG pricing is indirectly influenced by gas supply policy, taxes, and global energy trends, overseen by regulators and bodies like the Reserve Bank of India.
