Mileage Calculator: Check Average of your Car and Bike

Introduction: A story of my friend, Mr Suresh Kumar, a working salaried employee from Bhiwadi, who daily commutes around 60 km between his home and factory.

With rising fuel prices in India, he became quite concerned about his monthly petrol bills. Suresh used to roughly estimate his bike’s average mileage.

He believed ARAI’s claimed mileage is 100% accurate, but found himself frequently refilling his tank more than he had calculated.

Then, I shared with him our Ease Mileage Calculator, a tool that helped him find his real mileage and fuel cost based on india, saving him nearly Rs. 1,200 every month by just a few number calculations.

Let’s begin this guide to better understand-

What Do You Mean by Vehicle Mileage in India?

Mileage checker in india

In India, people usually prefer “mileage” as “average of my bike or car” – its simple meaning is how many kilometres a vehicle can travel per litre of fuel. It’s also known as fuel economy and is important for budget-focused users.

The ARAI usually check and gives a report of the mileage of vehicles such as cars, bikes, trucks, and scooters. According to the motor octane post, they claim higher mileage than the actual mileage, depending on the indian conditions.

Here are the components that Affect Mileage –

  • KMPL (Kilometres Per Litre): Common for petrol, diesel, and CNG vehicles.
  • km/kWh (Kilometres Per Kilowatt-Hour): Used for electric vehicles (EVs).
  • CNG in KG: CNG cars use kilograms as the unit of consumption.
  • km: Distance travelled in kilometres, the base for all calculations.

What are the factors for the average of cars and bikes in india

  • Traffic conditions – If you drive in heavy traffic, your mileage goes down.
  • Road quality – a bad road, a lot of time spent breaking while driving, reduces fuel economy faster.
  • Driving habits – if you accelerate very hard, your mileage goes down.
  • AC usage – Yes! AC increases engine load, which also reduces fuel economy, and even opening windows while driving affects down fuel average due to aerodynamic drag
  • Vehicle maintenance – Always keep maintenance up-to-date for better mileage.
  • Fuel quality – better fuel means more pure quality and better efficiency on the road.

What is the Formula to calculate the car average in India?

If you choose to calculate manually by using a pen and paper, you have to use this simple step-by-step formula to calculate it.

Mileage (km/l) = Distance Travelled (km) / Fuel Used (litres)

Real-Life Example of Suresh Gupta:

  • Distance: 300 km
  • Petrol used: 5.5 litres
  • Mileage = 300 / 5.5 = 54.54 km/l

For his TVS bike, this calculation helped Suresh adjust his riding habits to maintain better mileage always.
