
April 5, 2025 | Easemoney News desk: In a significant boost to the digital payment ecosystem of India, the transactions using RuPay credit cards via UPI apps have almost doubled in the first seven months of (FY25). as per the Data from the Ministry of Finance, It reached ₹63,825.80 crore—up from ₹33,439.24 crore during the same period last fiscal.
specific figures for April 2025 are yet to be released by the NPCI. it will likely become available in May or June 2025.
This sharp rise in the transactions reflects the growing indian customer’s preference for fast, contactless payments, integrated with UPI scan & pay system.
According to the phonepe UPI transactions stats, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana are leading the adoption of modern UPI Payments. RuPay’s share in credit card spending has grown to up to 16%, fueled particularly by UPI-linked usage.
RuPay Credit Card + UPI: Is a Game-Changer for Indian Payments
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) enabled UPI-linked RuPay credit cards in September 2022. It allowed users to make merchant payments using their RuPay credit cards through UPI-enabled apps by scanning QR codes. Since then, adoption has steadily surged, with FY25 marking a significant turning point.
According to NPCI official data:
- Growth: 91% in just 7 months
- Over 750 million RuPay credit cards on UPI transactions were processed
- From the Data 2025, the average monthly expenditure for UPI credit card users has reached approximately ₹40,000 per user.
- The market share of rupay credit card payment is only 2% in 2023, but it will boost to 12% in 2024,
- In February 2025, RuPay’s total share in the credit card market was 16% , where around 8% of total credit card spending was through RuPay credit cards linked to UPI.
- According to NPCI, the average transactions of UPI-linked credit cards is 40 per month, which is significantly higher (eight times) than traditional credit card users.
- A significant portion (around 45%) of UPI-linked credit card users are below the age of 30.
State-Wise Growth Snapshot (As of October 2024)
- Maharashtra: ₹692 crore
- Tamil Nadu: ₹692 crore
- Telangana: ₹506 crore
These states lead in RuPay credit card UPI transactions, indicating strong adoption in both metropolitan and semi-urban areas, including tier-2 and tier-3 cities. A major boost in transactions will happen in 2024-2025.

Charges Update for Merchants in 2025 – What’s New?

On May 1, 2025, NPCI is going to revise the interchange fees for select merchant categories. However, consumers remain unaffected, but merchants, especially in high-value sectors, will experience slightly increased Merchant Discount Rates (MDR) when accepting RuPay credit card UPI payments.
Looking Ahead: RuPay’s Trajectory into 2025 and Beyond
As of February 2025, the rupay share has risen to 16% in India, with nearly half of the transactions happening through UPI. This growth suggests that by the end of 2025, RuPay is poised to further solidify its position in the market.
The NPCI’s next initiatives include the 5,000-person-capacity research and development center in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex established for upcoming projects, which gives a footprint of expansion of UPI in India and internationally.
