What is the Tamil Nadu NHIS, and How Did It Start?
The New Health Insurance Scheme was launched in 2021 for state employees, pensioners, and their family members to provide financial safety for medical emergencies of any kind. The scheme provides a health insurance coverage of Rs. 5 lakh for a four-year block, with an enhancement to Rs. 10 lakh for specific treatments.
For employees, coverage is also up to Rs. 5 lakh in a four-year block. As per the news from The Hindu, the Tamil Nadu Government extended this scheme by one year from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.
It works with the help of United India Insurance Company and is monitored by the Tamil Nadu Government’s Finance Department. Every eligible person gets an NHIS health card (physical or digital), which must be shown at the time of treatment.
